From Painter to Licensed General Contractor in Florida

You climb the scaffold, prep the surface, prime, two coats, immaculate finish. But on an $80,000 job you collect $6,000, the GC keeps the rest. Here's how to flip that.

This course is currently taught in Portuguese. English and Spanish versions are in development; no launch date has been announced.

Why painters convert so well to General Contractor

You already coordinate crews, sequence trades behind you (drywall, trim) and manage punch lists. DBPR accepts painting experience toward the 4-year requirement when it includes coordination and project completion.

Painting + GC license = 5–10x bigger contracts

A solo painter bills $80–150K/year. With 2–3 crews: $250–500K/year. As a GC offering paint + full remodel: $800K–2M/year. The license is what unlocks the jump.

    Document your painting experience

    • Letters from each GC you painted for
    • Dated jobsite photos (before/after)
    • 1099s, checks, Venmo/Zelle history
    • Inspections passed where you were on the crew

Your jobsite experience is already worth gold

King Training is a course taught in Portuguese that takes you from the DBPR application to Pearson VUE approval, even if you've never set foot in a college classroom.

    Frequently asked questions

Do painters need a license in Florida?›

Pure residential painting usually doesn't require a state contractor license (some counties like Miami-Dade require a painter specialty). To sign contracts above $1,000 or pull permits on new construction you need a Building/Residential/General Contractor license.

Does painting experience count toward General Contractor?›

Yes. DBPR accepts painting on new builds, additions and major remodels as part of the 4 years required, especially with proof of crew coordination and schedule management.

How much does a Brazilian painting company gross in Florida?›

Solo: $80–150K/year. With 2–3 crews: $250–500K/year. As GC offering full remodel + paint: $800K–2M/year.

Can I keep painting as my specialty after becoming a GC?›

Yes, and it's a powerful strategy. Sign bigger jobs as GC, hire other subs, and keep painting in-house to capture the most profitable phase.
