Why drywall is the perfect on-ramp to General Contractor
If you install drywall (sheetrock, gypsum board) in Florida, you already master three of the most-tested skills on the General Contractor exam: blueprint reading, light structural framing and fire-rated assemblies compliance.
The drywall sub trap (and how to escape it)
The standard model is well known: a GC takes a $600,000 job, hires a framing/drywall sub for $40,000, and that sub passes half down to the install crew. You earn $18–20/hour, with no benefits, no real insurance, and signing nothing. Whoever controls the permit controls the money.
How DBPR evaluates drywall installer experience
The rule is simple: 4 years of construction experience in the last 10 years, with at least 1 year in a supervisory or equivalent role. Drywall layout, coordinating hangers and finishers and being responsible for QC all count.
- Notarized letters from each GC or sub you worked for
- Subcontract agreements (verbal ones can be converted to affidavit)
- Dated photos (smartphone EXIF accepted) of completed jobs
- Copies of received checks, 1099s, Zelle/Venmo records
- Approved inspections with your or your employer's name
Cost to go from drywall sub to GC
Total: between $2,500 and $4,000. One full residential job signed as GC repays the entire investment.
